03/2016

Where: Near Klapmuts (2016)

When:March

Popularity: +/- 120

Route: Moderately challenging route halfway up Klapmuts mountain for the first 6km followed with 3km fast and tricky downhills.

Elevation gain: 285 m

Great Grape Run 14km

10/2015

Where: Constantia

When: October 2015

Popularity: 800+

Route: Undulating route through the vine yards mainly on jeep track. Quite hard but enjoyable nonetheless.

Organisation: Hosted by KWay VOB. Good except that a marshall sent all runners the wrong way resulting in the course being shortened by 3.5 km…Finishing venue a bit iffy.

Not elevation chart due to shortened course.

La Capra Goat Run 15km Trail

10/2015

Where: Paarl (near Fairview)

When: October 2015

Popularity: +/- 200

Route: Torturous first 3km climb up to the rear of Paarl Rock. Some faster downhills on jeep track after that before another stiff climb via trail stairs at the 8km mark. More hills even after that make this for a tough course (thank goodness it was short!). Fabulous scenery worth taking the camera with for.

Organisation: Excellent. There are 5k,8km and a 28km version as well. Generous goodie bag justifies the R 250 entry fee.

Elevation gain: 600 m

Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge 24km

07/2015

Where:  Stellenbosch

When: May 2015

Popularity: +/- 200

Route: Challenging trail run through the Jonkershoek mountains. Technical, rocky single track, steep up and downhills will need all your concentration. Beautiful scenery if you take the time to stop. Normally a 22km route but was changed for 2015 for some reason…

Surface: Trail

Organisation: Very good by Wildrunners.

beaumont

Stellenbosch Farm Race 10km

11/2014

Where: Beaumont Wine Farm

Popularity: 200-250

Route: You know when it’s going to be tough when the route doesn’t allow for a lead cycle. After 2km it’s uphill on rutted farm road getting steeper through woods and grass until the 5km mark. Followed by steep dodgy downhills and another tough uphill at 8km mark. The last 500m incline back to the finish will test your patience. 274 m elevation.

Organisation:

Good. Parking is a bit of an issue as it is in a field with long grass, so be careful unless you drive a SUV.

Surface:

Gravel, sand.

satori

Satori Came Run 16km (10 miler)

09/2013

Where:  Noordhoek

When:September

Popularity: +/- 750(2013)

Route: Popular mainly off-road/trail run with a really steep climb after 3km meandering through wine farm, small holdings and Monkey Valley. Normally includes a stretch on Noordhoek beach. Tough course especially if it has rained a lot – don’t expect to get home clean and dry.

Entries limited to 1000. Ensure that you book early or will pay as much as R 250 (as a sort of penalty) if you enter to close to the 1000 mark. Although in the last 2 years there were only 750 finishers and I had to pay R 250…something doesn’t quite gel…

John Korasie 30 km

08/2012

Where: Simonstown Naval Base

When:August

Popularity: +/- 400 (2012)

Route: Takes you over Redhill, which is a steep climb and then towards Cape Point on Plantation Rd. There is a long imperceptible climb after 15km to 20km mark, which will test your patience. A few hills thrown in for the last 5km before coming back to Simonstown could have you cursing…Tougher than Glenryck or Bay to Bay which are the other 30k races on the WPA calendar.

Watch out for Baboons at the water stations.

Surface: Tar

Organisation: Good, registration point is a bit inconvenient what with the darkness you can’t see where one is going on the narrow path to registration.
